Work begins on new padel courts at Telford Tennis Centre

Facility will expand the range of sports on offer at centre in Wrockwardine Wood

Work has started on the construction of brand-new padel courts in Shropshire.

The sports facility is being created at Telford Tennis Centre in Wrockwardine Wood as part of a partnership between the local council and We Do Tennis.

The new courts are being delivered as part of the wider investment and partnership agreement previously announced for the centre in New Road.

The courts are due to open in the coming month.

We Do Tennis works with tennis clubs of all sizes throughout the UK with the aim of improving their coaching programmes and club operations.

It has been working with Telford & Wrekin Council's leisure services team for a number of years, developing and delivering the Tennis Coaching programme at Telford Tennis Centre and across the wider borough.

The addition of padel courts will expand the range of sports on offer at the tennis centre.

Co-director Nigel Hunter said: "Padel is flying at the moment with new venues opening at a fast rate. We are incredibly proud to be bringing Padel to Telford in partnership with Telford & Wrekin Council.

"We will be offering affordable courts for the local community.

"We have nine years of experience in facilitating participation in tennis, padel and pickleball (and) our facility will be the only venue where residents can play all three sports and get expert guidance, tuition and social sessions."

Cllr Angela McClements, the council's cabinet member for culture, tourism and leisure, added: "It's fantastic to see work now under way on the new padel courts at Telford Tennis Centre.

"Padel is growing rapidly in popularity and these new facilities will give residents the opportunity to experience an exciting and accessible sport right here in Telford.

"This investment demonstrates our commitment to providing high-quality leisure facilities and creating more opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to be active, improve their wellbeing and enjoy sport locally.

"We look forward to welcoming players onto the courts later this autumn."
