Warning on future of Legion

One of Shropshire's oldest Royal British Legion branches could close because of a lack of new members, organisers warned today.

The future of the Broseley branch looks bleak as no-one is joining or going to meetings. Chairman, Henry Pritchard, said the branch was formed in 1921 and it would be a great shame if it was forced to close.

"It was one of the first branches to be formed in Shropshire," he said. "At the moment we have about 40 members but the problem is people are not coming to the meetings.

"If we don't get more members and more people coming to meetings we may have to close.

"If the branch does close it means the Poppy Appeal in Broseley would be in jeopardy. Over the last two years this has raised £7,300, which is a considerable sum for a place the size of Broseley.

"That shows there is support in the town for the British Legion."

Mr Pritchard said the legion was open to anyone who would like to become a member and was not solely for ex-servicemen. For details contact Mr Pritchard on (01952) 882186.
