Two Powys groups benefit from funding for renewable energy projects
Two organisations in Powys are set to benefit from £1.19 million through the latest round of Ynni Cymru funding, helping people in Llanidloes and Machynlleth benefit from locally generated renewable energy while reducing energy costs and supporting community projects.
The projects are among 24 organisations across Wales set to receive a share of £8.27 million through the programme's third round of funding.
For households in Powys, community-owned Llanidloes District Energy Local Club is set to receive £597,210 to turn locally generated energy into local benefits. The investment will fund new solar panels, battery storage and electric vehicle charging points, allowing households signed up to the scheme to make greater use of renewable electricity generated within their community.
By using more locally generated power and reducing reliance on electricity from the national grid, participating households are expected to save around £368 a year on their energy bills. The project is also forecast to generate approximately £14,000 a year for community projects and activities, ensuring the benefits of renewable energy are shared across the local area.
In nearby Machynlleth, Dulas Ltd will use funding to install more solar panels and heat pumps at its headquarters. The project will reduce the organisation's use of fossil fuels and help provide locally generated electricity to households taking part in the Machynlleth Energy Local Club, helping more people benefit from energy generated in their local area.
Ynni Cymru is a Welsh Government programme that helps communities, businesses and public services create and use their own clean energy. It supports projects that help lower energy bills and bring benefits to local areas.
Since launching in 2023, the programme has supported more than 80 projects across Wales. This third round of funding will provide £8.27 million to 24 organisations, including two projects in Powys, bringing total investment through Ynni Cymru to more than £31 million.
Cabinet Minister for Enterprise, Connectivity and Energy, Adam Price, said: “I'm delighted that organisations in Powys are benefiting from this latest round of Ynni Cymru funding.
“These projects show how communities can take greater control of their energy future, keeping more money in local areas while helping households and organisations reduce their energy costs.
“From Llanidloes to Machynlleth, this investment will help more people benefit from locally generated renewable energy, supporting community initiatives and building a more resilient local economy.
“Ynni Cymru is delivering the Welsh Government's vision for greener, cheaper energy, owned and used by people and communities across Wales.”
