The spooky goings on at the Wrekin revealed in new book of ghost stories

The book of 23 short stories has been written by the Wrekin Writers.

A group of Shropshire writers have launched a book of ghost stories in time for Halloween, all based on the spooky goings on around one of the county’s most famous landmarks.

The Wrekin Writers was set up around 40 years ago, and once included Ellis Peters (real name Edith Pargeter) creator of the Brother Cadfael historical mysteries as a member.

Now around 19 current members of the 70-strong group, who range in age from their 20s to 80s, have released a collection of short stories set in and around The Wrekin and Wellington.

Jean Escott from the group, said they were set the challenge by their chairman.

“We meet every third Saturday of the month at Welliart where we chat about our successes and also have a workshop,” she said. “Our chairman Darren Bailey challenged us to write stories around the Wrekin based on local folklore, and 19 of us have written something.”

She said the book, Ghost Stories Around the Wrekin, features 23 eerie short stories, all set in and around Shropshire’s ancient, iconic hill with its three thousand years of history.

“Some are based in fact and some are completely made up, but they are all around 2,000 words,” said Jean.

She said the stories include tales of children daring one another into a derelict hall, a murdered girl walking the hillside searching for the justice she was denied, stories of lost ramblers and other ghostly goings on.

All proceeds from the book, which has been released just in time for Halloween, will be going to Severn Hospice.

The Wrekin Writers meet on the third Saturday of every month, except in December when they meet on the second Saturday, at 9.45am to 12pm at WelliArt in Duke Street, Wellington.

Ghost Stories Around the Wrekin is available in paperback (£10.99) and eBook (£2.99) from Lulu.com
