Wellington Post Office to close as discussions take place over new site

The Post Office has confirmed that a Telford branch will close next month.

The operator said that the Market Street branch in Wellington will shut at the close of business on February 16.

It has confirmed that it will look to restore the service as soon as possible and is in discussions with Wellington Town Council about relocating to a new premises.

The town council has also commented on the situation, saying it is working to relocate the service to the former Halifax building on Duke Street, which was purchased by the authority.

A Post Office spokesman said: "We can confirm the closure of Wellington branch on February 16 at 5.30pm due to the resignation of the operator. The vacancy is advertised on www.runapostoffice.co.uk.

"Wellington Post Office has been run by a temporary operator for a while and we are looking for a permanent solution. We are working closely with the council to relocate the Post Office as part of the regeneration of Wellington. A new operator would be required.

"We are looking to restore service to the area as soon as possible. In the interim alternative branches include Brooklands, which is 0.73 miles away, Arleston, which is 1.05 miles away and Admaston and Leegomery, both under two miles away.”

In a statement on social media Wellington Town Council said: "The town council wishes to reassure residents that it is already in ongoing discussions with the Post Office regarding the relocation of its services to the former Halifax building society on Duke Street.

"Meetings are continuing, and the council will provide updates as and when further information becomes available.

"The council will also work closely with the Post Office to ensure that any changes are clearly communicated to residents in the interim."

Councillor Paul Davis, chair of policy and resources at Wellington Town Council, said: “It has been a long-term strategic aim, as part of the ongoing regeneration of Wellington town centre, to ensure that residents have access to a Post Office that meets the needs of our town, its residents and businesses.

“The Duke Street property, formerly the Halifax building society, was purchased by Wellington Town Council specifically to create a new home for the Post Office, and we continue to work closely with the Post Office to achieve that aim.”
