'Perfect for anyone looking to try something new while staying active': Over 50s try their hand at indoor curling amid Olympic craze

Hot on the heels of Team GB snatching silver in curling at the Winter Olympics, a group of over 50s in Telford are showing anyone can take part in the sport.

Last week Canada denied Team GB their first men's curling gold in 102 years.

And with the Winter Olympics capturing public attention, Age UK Shropshire Telford and Wrekin has been inviting local people aged 50 and over to try their hand at the popular winter sport– without venturing to icy climates.

The charity’s indoor curling group meets every other Monday from 10.30am to 12pm at Horsehay Village Hall.

Claire Fishlock, senior service development officer at the charity, said since the Winter Olympics began, they have had a number of enquiries for people wanting to get into curling.

She said: "We are hoping the Olympics will get people interested and get them along to have some fun.

"Numbers are normally 25 to 30 but over the last few weeks over the Olympics we have had a lot of enquiries. A lot of people have asked if we are on ice - we are not but people should come down and give us a try.

"This class has been going for about two and a half years and is an absolute joy to be part of.

“It’s something that’s enjoyable for physical, mental and companionship. Good to get out and have some fun.

“We are a relaxed and welcoming group, and indoor curling is perfect for anyone looking to try something new while staying active. The game is very inclusive and suitable for people of all abilities, including those with limited mobility. Come along, give it a go, and discover what curling is all about – without braving the cold!”

Sessions cost just £3, which includes a cuppa and the chance to socialise afterwards.

Claire added that indoor curling is a fun and friendly activity where players slide specially designed rubber stones across a smooth floor – no ice, no skates, and no previous experience needed.

"Just like the traditional sport you may have been watching at the Winter Olympics, the aim is to get your stones as close to the target as possible while outmanoeuvring your opponents," added Claire.
