St George's Day celebrations return to Newport this weekend
Buns are prepared and the bunting is up for Newport's annual celebration of England's patron saint this weekend.

St George's Day has been celebrated with extra gusto in Newport since 2010, with hundreds of residents and visitors descending on the town centre to join in with the revelry.
A parade, which includes dozens of the town's children dressed as tiny dragons and St Georges march down the High Street, which is followed by a live dragon-slaying before the dragon is turned into sausages and handed out to the crowd.
Jugglers, buskers, morris dancers and street performers provide a few hours of entertainment in the annual event that has been described by organisers as the perfect picturesque English village event.
While the celebration is the 14th year since the first St George's Day celebration in Newport - it's the town's tenth event, due to Covid interruptions.
As is tradition, a month of fundraising has been taking part in the lead-up to the big day.
Residents are encouraged to throw in any spare change to the red buckets placed all over town in a bid to raise over a thousand pounds for local charities.
This weekend, the celebrations will kick off on Saturday, April 20 from 10am.
A temporary traffic restriction will be in place along High Street, Upper Bar, Stafford Street and St Marys Street, Newport between 12pm and 1pm to allow the procession to move safely.
For those looking for a weekend packed with patriotic revelry, the following day, Spring Into St. George’s Day returns to Telford Town Park from 11am to 4pm.
The event will feature the Knights of Nottingham who will be showcasing their jousting skills and entertaining the crowds with jousting tournament, alongside stage shows from Animal Guyz and Exotic Zoo, and model boats on the lake.
