New cricket nets to boost women’s and girls’ game at Telford sports club

Plans for new cricket nets at a Telford sports club have been given the green light by the local authority.

Last year, Allscott Sports and Social Club asked Telford & Wrekin Council for permission to install a new cricket nets.

The club said the three-lane training facility would provide training facilities for the growing women and girls cricket teams.

The application revealed the club's aim to make Allscott the second women’s and girls cricket hub in the county - the first being in Whittington.

During the consultation phase for the application, no objections were raised by any statutory consultees and it has received support from Wrockwardine Councillor, Gareth Thomas, and the Wrockwardine Parish Council.

Documents state the new facilities would be constructed by Dura-Sport, a company that has installed numerous cricket projects for a range of clubs and organisations, including Quatt Cricket Club and Whittington.

The new facility will be one of several improvements that have been made at the club in recent years.

In 2023, the sports club recieved a £475,000 grant from the Premier League, The FA and Government’s Football Foundation to help build a new two-storey club house.

The funding boost, along with contributions from Sport England, British Sugar and SJ Roberts Homes, also led to the creation of new bowling greens and football pitches.

Approving the recent plans, a spokesperson for Telford & Wrekin Council noted that the impact on neighbouring sporting uses would be "minimal" and the site would not result in a substantial loss of vegetation.
