Ketley business park eyed for new waste site
Plans have been put forward to create a new waste transfer station on a business park.
New proposals involve transforming Ketley Depot in the Ketley Business Park, Telford, into a new waste transfer station, complete with vehicle parking, a workshop and offices.
If approved, the station will transfer 40,000 tonnes of commercial and industrial waste per year and could potentially create a number of new jobs for the town.
Previously, Ketley Depot has been used as an engineering and building depot with a workshop and offices, as well as being a base for waste collection vehicles.
Catherine Slaytor, a spokeswoman for Veolia Environmental Services Shropshire, said: "If the planning application is successful, Veolia intends to use the facility as its trade waste collection depot and transfer station."
Veolia currently bases its existing waste collection fleet out of its premises at Dog-in-the-Lane, Telford, where it has been for many years.
Ms Slaytor added: "It now needs to relocate as the neighbouring Candles Landfill comes to the end of its operational life and is restored.
"Delivery of this facility in the local area will ensure that existing jobs are retained whilst some new jobs are created.
"Veolia has explored a number of potentially suitable sites across the Telford area, with a view to continuing to provide and improve this important service to local commercial businesses across Telford."
The site at the business park was deemed to be suitable, due it its size, the existing building and its use for similar activities over recent years.
Ms Slaytor added that the company will be endeavouring to work with local people to discuss the plans.
She said: "Veolia is committed to discussing its plans with local businesses, residents and councillors in the area and has already had meetings with the local councillors and the Local Planning Authority about the plans.
"Further engagement with local residents will be conducted as necessary as the application progresses."
