Telford parish council agrees to spend £20,000 on battery system for solar panels

Solar panels on the roof of a community centre have generated what was described as a significant income for the council.

A parish council in Telford has agreed to spend £20,000 on installing a battery storage system as part of a solar power scheme at one of its community centres.

Randlay Community Centre has had 78 solar panels on its roof since February 2024 and a meeting on Monday was told that a "significant' income is being generated.

Councillors at Hollinswood & Randlay Parish Council voted in favour of releasing £20,000 from reserves to pay for the battery system to be installed. The price has reduced recently too, the council was told.

The move had been recommended by the council's finance and audit committee and Councillor Harvey Unwin, who chairs that committee, proposed that the move be approved.

The council, meeting at Randlay Community Centre, supported the decision without debate.

Hollinswood & Randlay Parish Council has a Zero 30 climate change policy and has invested in projects including solar panels on community centre roofs. It was supported by Telford and Wrekin's Climate Change Fund.

Councillors were told that in the last five months the solar panels at Randlay have generated an income of £917.52. The council describes this as "significant."

Investing in the battery system completes the project.
