Struggle to identify suspects in Staffordshire and Shropshire acid attacks shown in latest figures
Latest figures from police forces that cover Staffordshire and Shropshire show a lack of suspects identified.
An investigation, launched through a series of Freedom of Information requests by Legal Expert, shows West Mercia Police recorded 12 acid attacks in the last three-years. But data shows that in 10 of those cases, investigations failed to identify a suspect.
Additionally, none of the 12 recorded attacks in the West Mercia region - which is made up of Herefordshire, Shropshire and Worcestershire - resulted in a custodial sentence.
Staffordshire Police recorded just a single acid attack over the last three years (which took place in 2024). However, the investigation into this incident concluded with no suspects identified.
Specialists have since commented on the ‘deeply concerning’ figures - stating that victims are being ‘robbed of justice’ when suspects are not identified.

Ellie Lamey, a Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA) specialist at Legal Expert, said: “These figures highlight a deeply concerning lack of accountability for what is a barbaric and life-altering crime.
“When perpetrators of such horrific attacks go unidentified, victims are robbed of the justice and closure they so rightfully deserve. Corrosive substance attacks leave victims with devastating physical and psychological scars that can take a lifetime to heal.
“It is absolutely vital that survivors understand they are not alone and that they can still seek specialist support and financial compensation to help rebuild their lives, even if their attacker has completely evaded the courts.”
Chief Superintendent for crime management at West Mercia Police Nigel Webster said: “While we acknowledge the devastating and long-lasting impact an acid attack can have on victims, the number of acid attacks is relatively low across our three counties, with 12 incidents recorded in the last three years.
“We continue to work diligently with our partners to improve detection and outcomes ensuring the most appropriate outcome for victims and ensuring justice is done on all crime types.”
A Staffordshire Police spokesperson said: “Acid attacks are extremely serious, violent crimes and we take all reports extremely seriously. In 2024, a thorough investigation was conducted into a reported acid attack.
“The investigation was closed after all lines of enquiry were exhausted and no suspect was identified. We remain committed to tackling all violent offences and protecting victims of crime across Staffordshire.”
