Man arrested for having sex on public bench by popular Telford footpath told police 'we were just making love'

The couple were seen by two teenagers

A man who was seen having sex with a woman on a bench next to a busy footpath in Telford has been fined £50.

Thomas Eggerton, of no fixed abode, was seen by two teenagers walking on the Silkin Way near the Wonderland attraction in Telford Town Park on April 20 this year, Telford Magistrates Court heard.

Prosecutor Katie Price told the court on Wednesday (July 8) Eggerton was “seen to be having sex with a female on a bench by two 17-year-olds”.

The teenagers called police; officers “attended and found the couple at the scene”, Ms Price said. She told the court Eggerton was spoken to and told the officers “we were just making love”.

Eggerton, 39, was charged with and later admitted one count of outraging public decency.

The magistrates handed down a community order to last 12 months. In that time Eggerton must complete up to 12 days of rehabilitation activity.

Magistrate Stephen Verdon also ordered Eggerton to pay a fine of £50 as well as £85 court costs and a £114 victim surcharge.

In addition he must notify police of any change in his address for five years.
