The new headmaster of a Shropshire independent day and boarding school said he was thrilled with his first “incredibly busy” open day.

Steve Green took charge at Wrekin College in Wellington at the beginning of term in September.

Wrekin College, a co-educational day and boarding school for children between the ages of four and 18, celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2030.

The school said that families from across the West Midlands, and even further afield, attended the open day.

Visitors were greeted by the school’s award-winning jazz band and choir.

They then toured the extensive grounds, state-of-the-art facilities and impressive sports provision.

The open day also showed off the school’s provision at Wrekin Prep, formerly The Old Hall School.

They also got the opportunity to speak to the new head.

Mr Green said: “The pupil panel was very well received, with visitors really liking the fact it was not rehearsed.

“There was a naturalness from our pupils that really demonstrates confidence in what we have to offer.

“These are normal kids in an extraordinary school, and I think that the way in which we presented ourselves made us accessible to hard-working families who simply want the best for their kids.”

Mr Green moved to Wrekin College from Queens College, Taunton.

Following the open day, Mr Green said that he has a number of one-on-one meetings in the diary with potential students and their parents.

He added: “It was an incredibly busy day, and I am hugely grateful to the pupils, parents and staff who gave up their time to show our visiting families around.

“They are all walking adverts for this incredible school, and it is a privilege to be at the helm,” Mr Green continued.

“I spoke with people from Staffordshire, from Birmingham, from Liverpool, from Worcestershire and everywhere in between, all of whom loved our flexi-boarding options and historic house system, as well as the fabulous facilities we have on offer.

“As we move towards our 150th anniversary, we have a long-term vision for the future of the school that combines a forward-thinking approach with a strong commitment to long-held traditions and values.

“We are not a selective grammar school with one purpose, but a school where young people can develop their existing passions and find new ones. At Wrekin, you truly can 'do it all'.”
