‘Our priority will be to maintain safe urgent and emergency care’: Shropshire NHS prepares for doctor strikes
Resident doctors across the NHS will go on strike for four days in June
Health bosses across Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin have warned some appointments will need to be rescheduled when resident doctors strike next month.
Resident doctors across the NHS will go on strike for four days in June, the British Medical Association (BMA) said this week.
The announcement follows the union’s first talks with new Health Secretary James Murray on Wednesday (May 27).
Walkouts will begin at 7am on Monday, June 15, ending at 6.59am on Friday, June 19.
The BMA said further strikes will be announced for July if no progress is made.
Health leaders have warned that the disruption may lead to thousands of people having appointments and operations either cancelled or rescheduled.
NHS bosses in Shropshire have said some appointments may have to be rescheduled but they are making preparations.
An NHS Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin spokesperson said: “NHS partners across Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin are aware of the planned industrial action by resident doctors from June 15–19 and are making preparations to minimise disruption.
“Our priority will be to maintain safe urgent and emergency care, with some routine services potentially affected.
“Patients will be contacted directly if their appointment needs to be rescheduled, and we will continue to share updates as plans are finalised.”
The last round of action by resident doctors, which lasted for six days over the Easter holiday, was the 15th strike since 2023.
The cumulative cost of the walkouts is estimated to have topped £3 billion.
Resident doctor members of the BMA have a mandate for industrial action until August.
The union is also balloting consultants and specialist, associate specialist and specialty doctors, in a vote to close on July 6.
