Shropshire MP delighted after given role in Tory reshuffle

Stuart Anderson was given the role by Kemi Badenoch this week.

A Shropshire MP says he is “delighted” to have been offered a job in the Tory reshuffle.

South Shropshire MP, Stuart Anderson was appointed Shadow Minister of State for Defence by Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch this week as she reshuffled her front bench and junior shadow ministers.

Mr Anderson, a former military veteran, says the role means he will be holding the Government to account on the implementation of the Strategic Defence Review and the Defence Investment Plan, with a particular focus on preparing the country for war.

Mr Anderson said: “The world is in its most precarious situation since at the end of the Second World War. The UK must be ready today to face the wars of tomorrow, so I am thrilled by the opportunity to serve as a Shadow Minister of State for Defence.

“The Government must get us ready for war, which requires a whole-of-society approach in partnership with industry and backed by firm spending commitments. I look forward to working with Shadow Defence Secretary James Cartlidge and the team in holding the Government to account on such an important issue and preparing our nation for all eventualities.”

As a shadow minister, Mr Anderson will be responsible for holding the Government to account on defence matters, raising questions and leading debates in Parliament.

Mr Anderson said he will also be reviewing the readiness of the country’s armed forces and helping to shape Conservative Party policy in the defence of the nation.

The MP has over three decades of experience working in defence and security around the world, from starting his life as a rifleman in the Royal Green Jackets to recently completing the Royal College of Defence Studies’ Global Strategy Programme.

Since entering Parliament, Mr Anderson has served on the Defence Committee and will continue to represent the UK on the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.
