Shropshire firefighters help counterparts tackle wildfires in South Wales

A spokesperson for Tweedale Fire Station has thanked everyone for their assistance

A Shropshire fire station has issued an update on its team’s efforts helping to tackle wildfires in South Wales.

Firefighters from Tweedale Fire Station in Telford have been helping Welsh counterparts tackle blazes as part of a special national operation known as the National Resilience Deployment.

In a post on social media, a spokesperson for the fire station said that crews have been on location in the region since Tuesday, August 18.

The spokesperson added that Shropshire firefighters had a very busy weekend assisting their Welsh equivalents on the ground.

Crews started their day yesterday (August 23) at 8am to “monitor the situation” of the incident that they attended on Saturday (August 22).

"After being stood down at 2.30pm and returning to headquarters, the Shropshire crews were mobilised again at 3pm to attend a further wildfire outbreak."

Firefighters “worked tirelessly” into the night to attempt to bring the blaze - where there was a fire front of roughly 500 metres - back under control.

The Tweedale spokesperson said that they expected Welsh firefighters to continue work at the scene overnight.

They added that “a huge amount of work” had gone into the deployment, stating that crews from across the nation were hard at work “to prevent further [wildfire] spread and protect the surrounding land.”

The spokesperson said: “A huge thank you to all the crews continuing to work tirelessly both in South Wales and back here in Shropshire.

“And once again, a massive thank you to the farmers and local landowners supporting firefighters on the ground, particularly with access, water and resources. Your assistance is hugely appreciated.”
