Cause of Shropshire crash in which two pensioners died 'unknown', coroner finds
The crash took place two days after Christmas.
Two people in their 70s were killed in a crash on an A-road near Telford, a coroner has recorded.
Shropshire’s senior coroner, John Ellery, heard the circumstances of the crash in which Richard George Mellor and Gillian Rosemary Swain were involved.
Both Mr Mellor and Mrs Swain were from Much Wenlock.
Mr Mellor, who was a retired policeman, and Mrs Swain, died when the silver Volvo XC60 they were travelling in crashed at Buildwas Bank at around 3.26pm on December 27 last year.
Mr Ellery said in his conclusion that the car, which was being driven by Mr Mellor, 78, was travelling towards Shrewsbury on the A4169 which, at the Buildwas junction, becomes the B4380.
He found that “for an unknown reason” the car left the road at the nearside and hit a number of trees before ending up upside down.
The inquest heard that Mr Mellor suffered multiple traumatic injuries and Mrs Swain suffered a traumatic head injury.
Both Mr Mellor, and Mrs Swain, who was also 78, were confirmed dead at the scene.
