The Salopian Bar in Shrewsbury town centre was packed to the rafters once again for the last 16 clash against Slovakia in Gelsenkirchen, Germany - despite it being a school night and in spite of three unconvincing displays in the group stage from one of the tournament's favourites.

Supporters in the popular Shrewsbury bar joined together to deliver a rousing chorus of God Save The King before proceedings got underway in Germany.

Things weren't going according to the script when Ivan Schranz's cool finish put the underdogs in front after 25 minutes.

Optimism turned to frustration in The Salopian, with fans bemoaning boss Gareth Southgate's tactics, team selection and even his very existence!

Some tried to remain calm and level-headed. Ian Richardson, from Bridgnorth, who was watching with pal Carl Harris, said: "He's done so much for England. You've got to keep supporting him.

"Everyone wants him out but being the manager isn't as easy as everyone thinks. But he needs to do something."

Nails were bitten and heads were in hands as chances came and went.

Substitutes Cole Palmer and Eberechi Eze came off the bench as England continued to probe in vain for a goal to take the match into extra time.

But it wasn't until the final minute of added time - after the introduction of ex-Shrewsbury Town striker Ivan Toney - that the Three Lions finally broke Slovakian resistance.

Marc Guehi flicked on a corner and Jude Bellingham acrobatically fired England level with a stunning strike, sending fans into raptures in the stadium and The Salopian alike.

Supporters in retro England tops with pints in their hands leapt on tables, roared with delight and ironically sang "Football's Coming Home" as despair turned to relief.

It didn't take long for relief to turn to elation when skipper Harry Kane nodded England in front right at the start of extra time. A nervy half hour ensued but Southgate's men held on to earn a last eight tie against Switzerland - and fans were in the mood to party.

As soon as the final whistle blew, the DJ played Gala's Freed From Desire. One woman was dancing with her dog in her arms, while others jumped arm in arm and sang along.

A relieved Carl summed it up best. "Always keep the faith, it was always going to happen," he said. "I tell you what now, we're going all the way."
