New Shrewsbury Town boss Micky Mellon was given a thorough grilling by dozens of supporters - as he whipped up a two-course meal for fans.

Mellon, along with assistant manager Mike Jackson and goalkeeping coach Danny Coyne, prepared a starter of mushrooms on toasted ciabatta and a main of chive buttered chicken in the kitchens at the Greenhous Meadow at the club's inaugural Sign and Dine event.

They also fielded a host of questions from fans, signed autographs and posed for pictures during last night's event.

Mellon, who took over the managerial reins in early May, said: "It was wonderful to meet the fans.

"I haven't had the chance to do that yet and to really find out how they feel.

"Some of their questions and some of the statements they made about how much they love the football club will stick with me."

"And it is only going to make me more determined, if I actually could be, to make sure that I follow through on my promise to put together a team that represents these people and they enjoy the experience of supporting this fantastic football club again."

The team, which has undergone some major changes over the summer, will be aiming to bounce back from last season's relegation from League One.

And the management team was quizzed on a variety of subjects last night from the reasons for last season's woes to transfer policy and their plans for the new campaign.

More sign and dine events are being planned for later in the season and the inaugural event has proved popular with supporters.

Will Roberts, 19, from Newport said: "I was impressed. They gave us honest answers, it was a good night, I had a good time and I hope to see more."

Liam Hoofe, 22, also from Newport added: "It was really good. It was nice to hear some honesty and I think everyone is feeling positive ahead of the new season."
