Shrewsbury road stays closed after flooding

A burst water main which completely flooded a Shrewsbury road has closed it until Sunday.
A burst water main which completely flooded a Shrewsbury road has closed it until Sunday.
The burst left a number of residents with no water and motorists facing diversions. The incident happened on Upper Road, close to the junction with Roman Road, shortly after 4am yesterday, and fire crews were called to clear the flood water.
Residents reported seeing Severn Trent Water carrying out work on the same stretch of road just days before.
But today the water giant said the burst was 'completely unrelated' to any previous work.
A spokeswoman said it could happen for a variety of reasons including unexpected ground movement or a sudden change in temperature.
Up to 10 maintenance vehicles remained on site today, from Severn Trent, Shropshire Council and National Grid, as access to Upper Road from Roman Road remained sealed off with a diversion in place. Residents can still access properties via Hereford Road.
Lewis Jellicoe, who lives beside where the repair work was taking place, said: "It woke us up at just after 8am and there has been quite a lot of noise and commotion. Our water supply hasn't been affected but I can see why they want to get it sorted as soon as possible."
Grace Marren, a spokeswoman for Severn Trent, said: "We had a handful of calls from customers who said they had no water supply but we have redirected water from elsewhere in our system to alleviate this.
"Unfortunately, as this is a complex repair we anticipate the road being closed until this weekend. We apologise for any inconvenience this will cause."
