Shrewsbury's historic Flax Mill has been named as one of the most at-risk industrial heritage buildings in the country – one month before a new multi-million pound bid for funding to regenerate the site goes in.

The site in Ditherington has topped English Heritage's annual Heritage At Risk register, which also includes the Chatterley Whitfield Colliery, in Stoke-on-Trent; Stanley Dock in Liverpool; and Battersea Power Station in London.

The news comes as supporters of the Flax Mill renew a bid to secure millions of pounds in funding for the redevelopment of the site after narrowly missing out on a grant earlier this year.

Councillor Alan Mosley, chairman of the Friends of the Flaxmill Maltings group, said a fresh application to the Heritage Lottery Fund would be submitted in November after it turned down a £12.7 million bid from Shropshire Council in May.
