A man who is the subject of a missing persons appeal in Shrewsbury is on bail for conspiracy to murder a police officer.

West Mercia Police said that Stuart Downes, 31, is not considered a risk to the public, but that they are "increasingly concerned for his welfare".

Mr Downes was last seen near Hereford Road in Shrewsbury on Saturday. He was reported missing on Monday.

He is currently on bail from Northern Ireland after pleading not guilty to conspiracy to murder a police officer.

The charges relate to an incident in north Belfast in May 2013 when pipe bombs were thrown at a police car.

Mr Downes is described as a white man with short light brown hair and blue eyes.

He was last seen wearing dark blue Adidas trainers, dark blue jeans, a dark blue jumper and a black cap.

A spokesman for West Mercia Police said: "Officers are growing increasingly concerned for Stuart's welfare and are appealing to the public to help locate him. He is currently on court bail in Northern Ireland but is not believed to be a risk to the public.

"Downes is on court bail in relation to a Police Service of Northern Ireland-led investigation, supported by Warwickshire Police and West Mercia Police alongside the West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit.

"He was reported missing on Monday, June 20, and the matter is being treated as a search for a high risk missing person."
