Heating will be switched off in the main ward block at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital this weekend so that engineers can carry out emergency maintenance to the system.

But hospital bosses say it will be turned back on overnight to help ensure a comfortable environment is maintained for patients and staff.

Adrian Osborne, Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust spokesman, said the forecast was for a mild weekend, which meant no problems were expected. However staff, patients and visitors were being asked to be vigilant by keeping doors and windows closed.

Trish Rowson, the trust's director of service delivery, said: "It is essential that this work takes place as soon as possible, and certainly before the cold weather.

"The repairs will only take place during the day, which means that the heating will be back on overnight."

Mrs Rowson added: "Patients and visitors don't need to make any special arrangements."
