See Shrewsbury's new 'parklets' now in place in Abbey Foregate

The additions are part of a series of changes to the area

New ‘parklets’ have been completed in Shrewsbury.

The mini seating areas have been added to Abbey Foregate, on the street's unused taxi rank.

The parklets feature fencing on the carriageway side, and are the first in a series of improvements planned for the area.

Shrewsbury BID posted a series of pictures of the additions on social media, and said people had started using them over the weekend.

It said: “The parklets on Abbey Foregate are in! It's brilliant to see them starting to be used by the local community and visitors this weekend.

“A big thank you to Shrewsbury Town Council for the wonderful planting, and the Kier team for managing the installation.

“Over the next two weeks, we'll be working with Shrewsbury Men's Shed to make some further improvements and make the parklets even more accessible for wheelchair users.

“Thank you to everyone who shared their views and helped shape this.”

Shrewsbury BID said the additions to Abbey Foregate were a direct response to an open consultation with businesses and the public in autumn 2025.

That saw nearly 400 people sharing their experience of the area between Abbey Hardware and The Crown.

Asked to vote for the improvements they would most like to see, 69 per cent of respondents wanted more seating and 62 per cent wanted more greenery - the two additions due to arrive first.

A separate pocket park is also being developed on disused land next to the railway bridge and Hair 21.

That project is being co-ordinated by Shrewsbury BID and land-owner Martin Monahan - who is giving use of the land free of charge.
