Newtown High School reports TikTok accounts sharing videos of teachers to police

The headteacher said the matter is being taken “very seriously”.

A secondary school says it has reported social media videos showing its staff to the police.

Newtown High School in Mid Wales revealed the action in a letter to parents of pupils at the school issued yesterday (April 22).

The school said the issue is being taken “very seriously”.

A post on social media including a screenshot of the letter said: “The school has issued a letter to parents addressing TikTok accounts which may include images or videos of some of our staff.

“We understand that this situation may be upsetting for those affected, and we want to reassure you that the school is taking this matter very seriously.”

The letter, from headteacher Natalie Havard, said: “I am writing to inform you of a matter we are currently addressing involving TikTok accounts which may include images or videos of some of our staff.”

Mrs Havard said the school had contacted police to report the accounts, had reported them directly to TikTok, and is speaking to parents to find out where the videos have come from.

She added that assemblies were being delivered to outline the need for responsible use of social media.

The letter added that the school would be reinforcing rules over mobile phone use, and reporting the accounts to the Internet Watch Foundation as the next step.

Ms Havard added: “It is pleasing to note over the weekend nearly all of these accounts have been removed, after the assemblies that took place on Friday.

“However, we would also value your support by taking the opportunity to discuss appropriate social media use with your children.”
