Roles of Powys town councils in next year's Tour De France still 'pretty unclear'

The roles of town and community councils in next year's Tour De France are still 'pretty unclear', Builth Wells Town Council has been told.

Stage 3 of next year's Grand Depart Great Britain will go from Welshpool to Cardiff on Sunday, July 4.

Covering a distance of 223km, it will travel through Mid Wales including Llandrindod Wells and Builth Wells down through the South Wales Valleys over the Rhigos viewpoint and Caerphilly Mountain, ending in Cardiff.

At the August town council meeting, Builth Wells clerk Mrs Louise Hammond said she had attended a recent meeting about the event.

She said organisers are now looking town and community councils having their own entertainment and doing their own fan zones in parks etc but it has not been confirmed yet.

“It is still pretty unclear about what the roles for the town and community councils will be but I think it is going to be a lot more work than we were expecting.

“It is a massive opportunity for Powys as a whole and it will bring in a lot of people to stay in our towns as well as television coverage highlighting the area for the future and things like that.”

Councillor Shaun Bromwell said there would be a big benefit from the big screens, corporate support and carnivals and entertainment.

“We have got plenty of experience in this town of putting on these types of events,” he said.

Councillor Gwyn Davies said the town's chamber of trade are very keen to do something and Councillor Lauren Pugh suggested the council should also speak to the Builth Bike Bash team, who she said she is sure would love to get involved.

Members agreed to keep an eye on updates in future months.
