“We just can't accept refurbished toilets in their current state,” Knighton's mayor says

Knighton Town Council cannot accept refurbished toilets behind the Knighton Hotel in their current state, the Mayor has said.

Work at the toilets in the car park behind the hotel has been on-going for months and many local residents have been asking about progress.

At the June meeting of the town council, the Mayor Councillor Tina Sharp gave a statement about the current situation.

She said: “There has been a lot of speculation around town about Knighton Hotel car park toilets.

“I would like to clarify that Knighton Town Council has spent no money on the refurbishment of these toilets.

“We had a grant along with other towns from the Welsh Government. Powys County Council hired the contractors but unfortunately the work is not up to standard.

“We have met with the county council's head of property design recently and he agreed that the work is sub-standard.

“He was due to meet with the contractor last week and is expected to contact us with news on the situation. He has also provided two companies for us to contact to look into the leak.”

A leak in the area of the toilets has been resulting in litres of water being flushed every day.

The water has now been turned off but at the same meeting the town clerk said workmen had not been able to locate the leak exactly.

She said the equipment used by Welsh Water could not find a leak and they thought the water was bouncing off something underground and they would need more specialised equipment to find it.

More recently, Councillor Sharp said they have now been given the details of someone who can look at the leak situation for the council.

A Powys County Council spokesperson said: “We are working with the contractor to secure improvements to some aspects of the refurbishment.”
