Raiders cause £400 damage to chip shop

Cash was stolen and hundreds of pounds of damage caused to a takeaway in Shrewsbury during an overnight burglary.

Raiders targeted the Shire Fryer fish and chip shop in London Road.

The broke into the chip shop between about 10pm on Thursday and 5.30am yesterday.

Police today said the property had been searched and some money stolen. Damage amounting to almost £400 was caused to a door, windows and a freezer.

Patricia Megoran, who owns the shop with her husband Steve, today said she was shocked by the incident. The couple were woken up by police who told them the news.

She said: "We have owned it for about 11 years. We have had a break-in before but that was a few years ago.

"They had found the money, broken the glass to get in and made a mess. They just smashed the door.

"It has caused a lot of damage. We are shocked really but it's what you expect these days.

"It's just the awful damage that they do. They empty all the cupboards out and leave the mess behind.

"We have also learned and not a penny will be left here, we do not want to encourage them back," she said.

The shop was trading as normal yesterday.
