RAF investigation after engine failure leads to emergency landing for plane at RAF Cosford
The incident involved a tutor plane
An investigation is under way after engine failure forced a pilot into an emergency landing at RAF Cosford.
The incident last Wednesday (August 26) involved a tutor aircraft operated by the University of Birmingham Air Squadron, which is based at the air force base near Albrighton.
An RAF spokesman said the plane had lost power after take-off, with the pilot having to carry out an emergency landing.
The plane was landed within the airfield boundary.
The pilot and another person who were in the plane both managed to get out of the vehicle unscathed.
The plane involved was a single-engine two-person Grob Tutor aircraft used to train pilots.
The RAF said tutor flying has been paused while investigations take place.
An RAF spokesman said: “A Grob Tutor aircraft operated by the University of Birmingham Air Squadron was involved in an incident at RAF Cosford on 26 August 2026.
“Following a loss of engine power after take-off, the pilot conducted a controlled forced landing within the airfield boundary.
“Both occupants safely exited the aircraft uninjured.
“As a precaution, Tutor flying has been temporarily paused whilst technical investigations take place.
“It would be inappropriate to comment further while investigations remain ongoing.”
