Man armed himself with steak knife after disagreement at Mid Wales pub

Man got a steak knife after a row at a Powys pub, court told

A man who armed himself with a steak knife in a Powys town, following a disagreement at a pub, will be sentenced next month.

Joseph Brueton, 36, appeared at Llandrindod Wells Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, March 24, where he admitted one charge of possessing a knife in public.

Brueton, of Thorpe Street, Easington Colliery, County Durham, had the steak knife in the East Street area of Rhayader on October 27, 2024.

Prosecuting Ms Sian Vaughan said Brueton got the knife following a disagreement.

“He left the pub then returned after, arming himself with a knife,” she said.

“No threats were made but perhaps you the knife will make you concerned with his rationale.”

Mitigating, Mr Geraint Parry said it is on the cusp of the custody threshold, so it would need to go off for a pre-sentence report.

Magistrates told Brueton that he would need to speak to a probation officer in order to help with the preparation of a report, but they said they would try to send the case to a court nearer the defendant, so he can be sentenced there.

They adjourned sentencing until April 15, with the case scheduled to be heard at Sunderland Magistrates Court, although the venue could change.

They ordered an all-options report, which could include a prison sentence.
