New Powys children's choir receives cash boost days after launching
New Powys children’s choir has been given a great cash boost, even before it starts regular rehearsals
A new Powys children’s choir which launched only a couple of weeks ago, has received a great cash boost.
The children’s community choir hopes to bring music, friendship and confidence-building opportunities to young people in the local area.
Founded by lifelong friends Mandy Davies and Lorraine Cadwallader-Jones, who have been singing together for over 50 years, the choir is rooted in a shared passion for music, performance and nurturing young voices.
With combined backgrounds in primary education and theatre, they bring decades of experience supporting children both in the classroom and on the stage.
The choir will offer a welcoming and inclusive environment where children can develop their musical skills while enjoying the joy of singing as part of a group.
They applied to Llandrindod Wells Town Council recently for a grant and they will receive almost double what they asked for.
Lorraine said the choir would be for children in Years three to eight and she said it would build teamwork, friendships, confidence, a sense of belonging and community connection as well as giving the youngsters fun and enjoyment.
She asked for £250 as a start up fund and said it would pay for insurance, membership and affiliations of registered organisations for performing rights, a speaker, music scores and subsidise choir t-shirts.
Lorraine said the choir would be a weekly fun rehearsal , the youngsters would have access to music from a wide range of styles and genres and they would be able to perform at community events.
Llandrindod Wells Mayor Councillor Steve Deeks-D’Silva said: “I think this is really massive. They are our kids and the more we can put on for them the better. If we can get a choir going that would be wonderful.”
Deputy Mayor Councillor Kim Nicholls added: “I think it’s a fantastic thing they are doing. When we heard the young choirs singing the other night at a fundraising event they were fabulous. I would like to give them a £250 and I will donate £200 from my Deputy Mayor’s allowance too.”
“A choir is a great way of us getting people together, so many positive things come from choirs. The more we can do to support these sorts of things the better, “ said Councillor Chris Owen (Blue).
Members agreed to give the choir a £250 and a £200 donation from the Deputy Mayor’s allowance.
Regular rehearsals for the children’s community choir begin on Monday, April 13 at the Royal British Legion
