The medieval castle rises dramatically above the extensive gardens and the striking terraces blasted out of the rock

New Shropshire Star photos show off a beautiful National Trust castle and its equally impressive garden right on our county’s doorstep.

Powis Castle and Garden just outside Welshpool in Powys looks the part whatever the weather, but makes for an especially stunning spectacle in the summer months.

The medieval castle and the dramatic Italianate Terraces it sits atop lie less than 10 miles from Wales’s border with Shropshire - an ideal destination for a day out with a difference.

The National Trust, which manages the sprawling site, is also rightly proud of what it calls “one of the finest gardens in Britain” which boasts huge clipped yews, an Edwardian formal garden and plenty of unique sculptures to find.

Built in the 13th century as a medieval fortress, the castle and garden as seen today reflect the changing ambitions and visions of the Herbert family, who occupied the castle from the 1570s.

Furnished with decorative fabrics, world-class paintings, furniture, tapestries, and the unique Clive Collection of South Asian objects, the interior reflects the Elizabethan period through to the Edwardian period.
