Popular social media apps go down for millions of users in UK

Facebook and several other Meta-owned platforms appear to have gone down worldwide in what appears to be a huge outage.

Earlier today (12 June), shortly after 2:30pm, websites such as Downdetector began to notice a spike in users in the UK reporting error messages when trying to access the Facebook app on its web and mobile sites.

Users have also noticed issues when accessing Instagram and the WhatsApp desktop feature.

Instagram seems to be partially working but not every feature is loading properly. The web versions of both Instagram and WhatsApp appear not to be loading.

According to downforeveryoneorjustme, the issue is not just in the UK but also worldwide. Users from the Philippines, Canada, the USA, Australia and India are all reporting issues when trying to access their accounts.

The main Facebook website showed an error and visitors were told that “something went wrong” and that the company is “working on it and we'll get it fixed as soon as we can”.

Disussing the outage on Reddit, one user, wrote: "I was logged in but no stories would load, posts and reels loaded fine but no comments would appear on anything! Then it logged me out and wouldn’t allow me to log back in. Messenger too! Couldn’t load any new messages."

More to follow.
