A Telford businessman who bet on Hillary Clinton making it to the White House is thanking his lucky stars after winning a £720 payout despite her defeat by Donald Trump.

Bookmaker Paddy Power admits having "expensive egg on its face" after being so sure the former Secretary of State would be the next American president that it paid out three weeks early.

In total it paid £4.4 million to customers.

Pest control operator David Harbinson, from Leegomery, who placed a £90 bet on Mrs Clinton four years ago, is celebrating after receiving his winnings before voting day.

"When Barack Obama took office I made a speculative bet that she would be next," he said.

"I think the bookies went along with the polls and thought she would get over the line. I just had a hunch which turned out to be wrong but it still resulted with me being in the money. Once the bookmakers have paid out they can't ask for the money back.

"They will have to pay the Hillary backers and those who won after betting on Donald Trump."

He added: I think the next four years will be a bit scary, which is a shame because I didn't think either of the two candidates were that great in the campaign."

Paddy Power spokesman Feilim Mac An Iomaire said "We're in the business of making predictions and decided to put our neck on the line by paying out early on Hillary Clinton, but boy did we get it wrong.

"We've been well and truly thumped by Trump with his victory leaving us with the biggest political payout in the company's history and some very, very expensive egg on our faces."

The company said despite Mr Trump's scandal-hit campaign Clinton suffered from the reopened FBI investigation over her alleged email problems which resulted in a huge surge in bets for the billionaire businessman.

Despite the faux pas Paddy Power is now taking 4/1 bets on Trump being re-elected in 2020, 20/1 that he will build a Mexican border wall and 100/1 that he will change the White House to gold.
