'Tackle antisemitism in universities,' Shropshire MP tells Parliament
A Shropshire MP has called for more work tackling antisemitism in universities in the wake of an attack on a Jewish ambulance service.
Mark Pritchard, MP for The Wrekin, said nearly half of Jewish students had witnessed support for anti-Israeli terror organisations on campus,
Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson has asked Sir David Bell to conduct a review into antisemitism in schools and colleges in England, but Mr Pritchard said he wanted to see this extended to cover universities as well.
In a question to security minister Dan Jarvis, Mr Pritchard asked what could be done to tackle antisemitism in universities.
“A recent report showed that 49 per cent of Jewish students have witnessed glorification of Hamas and Hezbollah on campus,” he said.
“What more can the minister do to work with universities, not just schools and colleges, to root out antisemitism?”
Mr Jarvis said Mr Pritchard raised important points about the importance of activity that took place in academia and education.
He said a representative of the Union of Jewish Students had met with the Prime Minister following an arson attack on ambulances belonging to a Jewish health charity in Golders Green, North London.
Mr Jarvis praised the work of the Holocaust Education Trust.
Two men have been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life after four Jewish charity-owned ambulances were set on fire in north London.
The Hatzola ambulances were set ablaze in Golders Green in the early hours of Monday, in an incident being treated as an antisemitic hate crime.
One man, 47, was arrested by the Metropolitan Police in north-west London on Wednesday morning and a 45-year-old man was arrested in central London.
