Three candidates, one seat available.

There is so much at stake for our community in this year’s election to Telford and Wrekin Council.

Your vote in this year’s council elections will decide the future of our town for the next decade.

Over the past four years Wellington has been overlooked by Telford and Wrekin Council. We cannot risk another four years of uncontrolled house building, a chronic lack of parking, a lack of investment in our roads and local services.

It’s only by electing me on May 2, 2019 that we can ensure:

  • A stop to uncontrolled house building – to preserve our identity.

  • More free parking in Wellington – to keep our High Street prosperous.

  • More investment in our roads and pavements – to make sure we can enjoy our town.

We all know Haygate Deserves Better, and together we can bring change for our community.

Graham Cook, Labour (incumbent)

Graham Cook

Graham Cook is seeking re-election as your borough and town councillor for Haygate ward

Graham worked hard against Conservative opposition to secure investments and improvements into Haygate including a record £600,000 for the upgrade of roads and footpaths. Graham will continue to push for more investment across the ward in the next round of spending which only Labour has promised to deliver.

Having secured funding for events in Wellington Town Centre, Graham is now seeking significant funding to regenerate the whole of Wellington town centre.

Since being elected, Graham has allocated £8,000 ward funding to local voluntary groups and community organisations. This includes helping with the purchase of a new defibrillator for Bowring Park.

Protecting services at the Princess Royal Hospital is an ongoing priority for Graham and he has vigorously campaigned against cuts to the local police force. He is also proud of Labour’s commitment to maintain free parking in all council-owned car parks in Wellington.

Developers of Haygate Fields have promised to fund a number of road, transport and other improvements to play facilities in the area and Graham will keep a watchful eye on this. If elected, Graham will continue to work hard on your behalf.

Standing for election is an expression of a desire to serve – or at least it should be. And the serving should be of the community, and the people in your ward – not serving yourself, or your party. I believe in local democracy, and am frustrated with the state of politics. Many people don’t know who their councillors are and feel powerless to see change where they live. Trust seems to be at a new low. I want to help fix it, and know it would be a great privilege to represent my neighbours’ concerns and interests, while seeking what is best for our town.

An independent candidate has one loyalty: the electorate. I would be available and accessible. I want to find out: Why is Wellington High Street still ailing? What is being done to preserve Wellington’s rich history? Why are we on the verge of losing our A&E? Why is the CSE inquiry taking so long? Why are there no buses on Haygate Road? Why is the council suddenly splashing the cash? (not their cash, yours!) Why did Wellington Cottage Care have to close? Why does council tax rise every single year? So many questions – I will seek answers.
