Pet owners directly affected by investigation into Herefordshire pet crematorium to be contacted

Pet owners directly affected by a probe into a Herefordshire pet crematorium are set to be contacted as part of an ongoing investigation.

Herefordshire Council launched an investigation into Animal Funeral Services, based at Litfield House near Kington, after images surfaced showing what appeared to be bags of animal remains left outside and in an unlocked van, along with ashes and animal bones also left in the open.

An investigation led by Herefordshire Council’s Animal Health and Animal Welfare Team is underway, and they are working alongside the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) and the Environment Agency.

A council spokesperson has now confirmed that pet owners identified as being directly affected will be contacted and offered information and support as further details become available.

Councillor Barry Durkin, cabinet member for roads and regulatory services, said the council recognises how "upsetting and distressing" the situation is for those involved, and understands why the images and reports which have circulated on social media have "caused concern and anxiety for pet owners".

"The Council is continuing to work with the relevant agencies as enquiries progress and will ensure that appropriate action is taken within our responsibilities," he added.

"We will continue to provide updates where we are able to do so, while allowing APHA’s enquiries to take their course.”

In July an APHA spokesperson confirmed a "stop notice" was issued on July 9, prohibiting the use of animal by-products at the crematorium while the investigation is ongoing.

The investigation began after a woman who went in search of her own beloved pet, Teddy, made a grim discovery at a Herefordshire pet crematorium.

Jessica Roberts from Bridgnorth went to Animal Funeral Services to find out what had happened to her dog, Teddy, but she discovered the bodies of deceased animals in bags outside and in a van.
