An online petition has been launched calling for a GP from Oswestry to be reinstated after he was struck off for having an affair with a patient.

So far 245 people have signed the petition which urges the General Medical Council to reconsider its decision to remove Simon Robinson from the medical register.

Patients of his say striking the 44-year-old doctor off is a 'major loss' to Oswestry.

Robinson, who practised at the Cae Glas surgery in Oswestry, was struck off last week after a General Medical Council tribunal found he had abused his position by engaging in sexual acts with patient, Jill Tudor, in his surgery and at her home.

The online petition, started by Lisa Jones, can be found at www.change.org/petitions/save-dr-robinson-get-the-gmc-to-reconsider-there-decision

It states: "Please support my petition which will be submitted to the General Medical Council to show our support for Dr Simon Robinson our local GP.

"We would like the General Medical Council to reconsider their decision to strike him off the register and allow him to continue to practice in Oswestry."

Those signing the petition include patients who say Robinson had saved the lives of their relatives.

One patient, Lara Evans, says: "The GMC's decision will result in a major loss to Oswestry and the surrounding areas if he is not allowed to continue to practice."

Other people who have signed the petition have called for Robinson to continue to practise with restrictions and say he will be a huge loss to medicine.

The General Medical Council disciplinary panel ruled last week Robinson's fitness to practice was impaired after the encounters with Miss Tudor which happened during a 16-month affair between July 2009 and November 2010.

Although mother-of-four Miss Tudor, 50, waived her right to anonymity the tribunal referred to her only as Patient A at the hearing.

Panel members said Robinson's denial of the allegation throughout meant Miss Tudor, who lives in the Oswestry area, had to give evidence and have the recordings of the encounters played at the public hearing.

Robinson maintained he did not have sexual relations with the woman and claimed the phone recordings had been fabricated.
