Oswestry residents attend 'emergency briefing' on climate

More than 500 screenings are taking place across the country.

Oswestry joined venues across the UK in hosting a screening of a climate change ‘emergency briefing’.

The event, which showed the ‘People’s Emergency Briefing’, was hosted by Oswestry Climate Action Hub at the Maona cinema.

More than 60 people attended to view a film that organisers described as bringing together the latest evidence on “the climate and nature crisis facing the UK and the response that is required”.

More than 500 screenings are taking place UK wide, including in six other towns across Shropshire.

The events follow the National Emergency Briefing which was held at Westminster Central Hall on November 27, 2025, and was attended by more than 1,200 MPs, peers and leaders from across UK society.

The organisers are calling for a government-led TV screening and are asking MPs across Britain to support this.

Sahrah Wilding, who attended the event said “What’s happening isn’t an easy listen but sharing how we felt with others helped. The idea that we can work together here in Oswestry is heartening and encouraging. Our political system has proven incapable of responding so we must act, locally, ourselves.”

The film was followed by a discussion, which included sharing the work people and organisations are already doing - and possible next steps.

Marina, a facilitator at the event said: “It’s important to recognise the strengths we already have in what people are doing but also building on that, seeing the bigger picture, but acting locally.”

The Climate Action Hub has a follow up meeting to share experiences and decide on local responses, at 36 Bailey Street at 7pm on May 21.
