Retro gallery: Winter scenes across Shropshire, Mid Wales and the borders — snowball fun, icy roads and memories from years gone by
Were you dreaming of a white Christmas? While it’s certainly turned a bit chillier this week, we haven’t quite had the snowy scenes the movies promise.
So, we’ve delved into the archives to revisit some wintry moments across Shropshire and Powys over the decades.

Montford Bridge, January 17, 1955: 'Despite hard work by road gangs, Shropshire roads were treacherous yesterday. The A5 on the Welsh side of Shrewsbury was particularly bad. These men were spreading grit at Montford Bridge, near Shrewsbury,' read the caption.

January 20, 1979. The caption was: 'This giant snowman was a combined effort by the neighbours of Fair View Drive, Bayston Hill, Shrewsbury. On Saturday, with many helping hands and the use of scaffolding, they achieved a height of 14ft which could get into the Guinness Book of Records.'

'The scene today on the Wellington to Dawley Road, where a 200-yard drift is thought to have covered several abandoned cars,' is the caption . The picture was taken on January 10, 1968, and published same day. The leading vehicle is a Mini van followed by a Ford Transit.
