Support for Shropshire homes plan at ex-RAF base
Plans to build homes on a former RAF training camp in the Shropshire countryside have been met with widespread support.
Residents and councillors in Stoke-upon-Tern, near Market Drayton, have welcomed the proposal for the site at Warrant Road.
About 40 people attended a public consultation event in the village hall last night to find out more information about the scheme put forward by TAFS.
Members of Stoke-upon-Tern Parish Council then agreed to support the idea of building homes on the land at a special meeting held afterwards.
People who attended the public consultation event were shown drawings of two alternative schemes for the site – both of which featured about 30 homes and one of which contained affordable housing.
The agent working on behalf of the applicants said the scheme was in the very early stage and a planning application had not yet been submitted to Shropshire Council.
Residents welcomed news the site was being earmarked for housing and said creating about 30 homes was appropriate for the area. Grace Daniels said: "I think it is a good thing to be turned into houses rather than anything else."
Another resident, who did not wish to be named, said:
"Some should be affordable to encourage young families here to sustain things like the school and church."
At their meeting, parish councillors agreed to support the proposed residential use for the site as well as ask Shropshire Council whether it could be included as part of its SAMDev – the blueprint for development in the county.
Councillor Richard Wright said: "I think this is a superb use for the site."
