Home owners and businesses along the rivers Severn and Vyrnwy have been advised to be prepared with more rain expected throughout the week.

The River Severn is due to peak this morning in Shrewsbury with a reading of 3.77m expected at the Welsh Bridge gauge.

Frankwell and St Julian's Friars car parks in Shrewsbury town centre were closed with people advised to use the park and ride service.Shropshire Star weatherman John Warner said: "There was quite a bit of rain again overnight.

"There was about an inch in North Wales and a quarter of an inch in Shropshire.

"More rain is coming tonight and the river should peak tomorrow morning.

"There will be more heavy rain again on Saturday, particularly later on, but we should get some respite after that with Sunday and Monday looking better."

Environment Agency spokeswoman Holly Smith said the flood barriers in Shrewsbury were at the second phase, although that could change if the river level continues to rise.

She said the river at Ironbridge was expected to peak tomorrow when river levels could reach 5.1m.

She said: "Ironbridge is on a warning at the moment and plans for flood barriers are on hold.

"A decision will probably be made this afternoon.

"This morning the decision was made to put it on hold. That situation may be reviewed later on today."

Dave Morgan, spokesman for Telford & Wrekin Borough Council said it had not yet had any notification to deploy the flood barriers.

The River Severn continued to rise in Bridgnorth today but was not expected to reach the levels of the December floods.

Environment Agency officials said a flood watch was in place and the level was expected to peak at about 4.2m on Saturday.

Flood warnings were still in force today for the River Vyrnwy from Llansantffraid to Shrawardine as high winds and rain hit the region overnight.

Steve Oakley, divisional surveyor, said the high winds had caused a few trees to fall down across the region in the night, including on the B5069 from St Martins to Weston Rhyn Road and the A528 Ellesmere to Wrexham Road.

Heavy winds also brought down at least two trees in south Shropshire last night causing blocks on the A4117 at Hopton Wafers and the B4364 at Middleton between 6.30pm and 7pm.
