Newport Waitrose gets green light to replace 22-year-old signs

It comes amid construction work on the shop’s car park

A Shropshire supermarket has been given the green light to replace signs that it has had for 22 years.

Construction work has started at Waitrose in Newport after planning permission was granted last month for an “upgrade” to the car park and the building of an extension to support its online business.

Another application, for new signs, was approved this week after officials assessed the potential impact on the area around Audley Road and the nearby conservation area.

Officials found that "existing signage has been in situ since approximately 2004".

They added that the advertisements are being replaced at similar scales to the existing ones and will reflect the "updated corporate colours and designs of the Waitrose supermarket chain”.

They were "not considered out of character with the character and appearance of the primary shopping area”.

A Waitrose spokesperson said: 'We are making a few updates to our Newport store to enhance the experience for our customers and partners.

"These plans include refreshing our car park, updating the signage, and constructing new storage to best support our online business.

"Waitrose Newport will remain open as usual with partners on hand to answer any questions."
