New Sainsbury's Local convenience store planned for Shropshire village

The new shop would create 20 new jobs

Sainsbury’s wants to build a new convenience store in a Shropshire village.

The firm has applied to Shropshire Council for planning permission for a new shop and car park in Bayston Hill, near Shrewsbury.

The proposal is for the Perfect Car Company site off the A49, known as Hereford Road.

A design and access statement submitted by planning consultants Alder King said the new store would create 20 new jobs.

It added that the car park would have 13 spaces and that the vehicle access would be off the A49, describing it as “well placed” for local residents and passing trade.

It stated: “The convenience store has a gross internal area of 360sqm, including a net sales area of 252sqm, plus back-of-house storage and a colleague area. The store is to be occupied by Sainsbury’s Supermarkets Ltd as a Sainsbury’s Local.

“The location of the site is well placed to serve residents of Bayston Hill and pass-by trade given its location fronting on to the A49.

“The western part of the site comprises the car park, which will provide a total of 13 car parking spaces (comprising 11 standard spaces, one disabled space and one electric vehicle charging space). Three cycle hoops are also provided at the front of the store, to provide six cycle parking spaces.

“Vehicular access to the site is proposed off Hereford Road, which retains the existing access point. The existing vehicle dropped kerb to the northern side of the site is to be improved to provide the site access.

“Pedestrian access to the site will be provided along the southern boundary of the site, from Hereford Road, which segregates vehicle and pedestrian movements.

“The store’s delivery area is located on the northern side of the store, adjacent to the store when viewed from Hereford Road. Access to the delivery yard will be via the site access off Hereford Road.”

The statement said the planned building would be similar to the current car sales showroom on the site.

It stated: “The scale of the proposed building is akin to the existing former car sales showroom building and the adjacent dwelling.

“The proposed store will be located to the rear of the site, much like the existing built form.

“The height of the building reduces the prominence of the store within the street scene and impact from neighbouring dwellings.”

The planning statement added: “Importantly, the proposal will provide a local convenience shopping facility for residents in the eastern part of Bayston Hill, reducing the need to travel longer distances for day-to-day shopping needs.

“The site is accessible both on foot and by bicycle, and it is anticipated that a significant proportion of trips will be made by these sustainable modes.

“In addition, many vehicle trips are expected to comprise pass-by journeys from traffic already travelling along the A49.”

A decision on the proposal will be taken at a later date.
