New footpath opens between RAF Museum Cosford and train station

A new 30mph speed limit is also now in place

Taking the train to the RAF Museum in Cosford just got easier, with the completion of a new footpath.

A new footpath linking Cosford railway station to the RAF Museum has been completed - meaning visitors will no longer have to walk on the road or negotiate the grass verge during the 15-minute walk between the station and the museum.

The project has also involved the installation of new street lighting inspired by the RAF roundel (the circular identification mark painted on RAF aircraft) and a reduced speed limit of 30mph along the route.

Work on the scheme began in June, with the final surfacing and lighting installation completed in October.

Barry Smith, director of visitor and income development at RAF Museum, said the project was “an important step towards welcoming more visitors” to the museum.

“With a safer and more convenient route in place, it makes travelling by train a more attractive option for our visitors and colleagues alike,” he said.

“We are extremely pleased with the outcome, it’s going to make a huge difference.”

The project was funded by Active Travel England and delivered through a partnership involving Shropshire Council, the RAF Museum, RAF Cosford, WM Trains Ltd and West Midlands Rail Executive.

Rob Wilson, Shropshire Council’s cabinet member for transport and regeneration, said the project was “a fantastic example of what can be achieved through excellent partnership working”.

“It’s a scheme we can all be genuinely proud of,” he added.
