New chapter for Newport school as library transformation under way

The redevelopment coincides with National Year of Reading 2026

The transformation of a school’s library is under way in Newport.

Students at Burton Borough School in Newport are set to benefit from a transformed library, with the revamped space expected to open before Christmas.

The project has been made possible through funding from Newport Town Council, which supported essential refurbishment work carried out by Shuker Building & Development.

The improvements include closing the library’s open balcony and installing new windows to create a quieter space for students.

Principal Caroline Bedford said the redesigned library would give students a place to enjoy books and take time out from the demands of the school day.

“The redesigned space will offer a welcoming, calm environment where students can explore new interests, enjoy great books, study independently or simply take a quiet moment during a busy school day,” she said.

Alongside the library improvements, the school is investing in its book collection and ensuring pupils have access to a wider range of reading material.

In addition, every Year 7 and Year 8 student will receive a new book to take home and keep, through the BookTrust Bookbuzz programme.

The school has also received £1,400 in Department for Education funding through the National Year of Reading initiative, allowing it to purchase additional titles.

“Reading matters at Burton Borough because it unlocks the curriculum. But our ambition goes further than academic success. We want students to discover that reading can mean curiosity, enjoyment, independence and escape,” Caroline added.

“We are proud to be making reading an increasingly visible part of life at our school.

“We’d like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Councillor Tim Nelson whose ongoing support has helped secure vital funding for both the library redevelopment and the Bookbuzz programme, and to Kirsty Finchett, the manager at Newport Community Library, whose expertise and encouragement have been invaluable throughout the project.”
