Fears were today growing that an ex-easyJet pilot was the second man killed when a plane crashed into a mountain on the Shropshire/MidWales border.

Air accident investigators were today continuing to examine the wreckage of the twin-engine plane which came down on the Long Mountain, near Welshpool, shortly after noon on Wednesday.

Yesterday experienced pilot Bob Jones – who set up and ran Mid Wales Airport at Welshpool – was named locally as one of the victims.

But it is now feared Steve Carr, 55, from Ruthin, in north Wales, was the other man.

Dyfed-Powys Police said formal identification of both men would take place over the next few days.

A former RAF pilot, Mr Carr flew for various airlines including easyJet.

After retiring, he pursued his love of music and set up his own recording studio in north Wales.

Today, one of his friends, who did not wish to be named, said: "The second person in the aircraft with Bob Jones is feared to be a dear personal friend of mine called Steve Carr.

"He was a professional pilot recently retired from easyJet. Steve was highly respected and held in high regard by all who knew him. In addition he was a wonderful dad to his two young daughters."

Officers from the Air Accident Investigation Branch are hoping to move the Piper Navajo aircraft to their headquarters in Farnborough over the next few days.
