Man spared jail over Telford sexual assault that left victim experiencing flashbacks and nightmares

The victim said she had been left suffering flashbacks and nightmares.

A man has been spared jail over a sexual assault in Telford.

Breeze Muricken, 27, of Dovedale Avenue, Coventry, was sentenced at Shrewsbury Crown Court after pleading guilty to one charge of sexual assault.

Philip Beardwell, prosecuting, said Muricken had initially denied the offence, but changed his plea.

The court was told the offence had taken place in Telford.

Police were alerted to the offence after Muricken fled the scene, and he was arrested by officers after his car was picked up on ANPR cameras in Coventry.

He initially gave officers false details before his arrest.

Mr Beardwell read a statement from Muricken’s victim who said the incident had left her experiencing flashbacks and nightmares.

Kevin Jones, mitigating, said: “He recognises what he had done was wrong and is trying his best to put things right.”

He added: “I suggest while this is a case that crosses the custody threshold it is a case that can and should be suspended.”

Judge Deni Mathews said he accepted “this is entirely out of character”.

He added: “From all of I have read you have shown genuine remorse and insight into the offence you committed and its impact on your victim.”

Judge Mathews said that because of mitigating factors, such as ‘remorse’, ‘prospects of employment’ and ‘lack of previous convictions’ meant he was prepared to suspend the sentence.

Muricken was sentenced to six months in prison, suspended for two years.

As part of the order he must complete 20 rehabilitation activity requirement days, and 150 hours of unpaid work.
