The work saw a large crane set up near The Wharfage spanning the River Severn beside the Iron Bridge on Monday.

The road was set to be closed from 9.30am until 3.30pm, but the work took longer than expected and was set to be completed by 11pm.

Tom Jones, of English Heritage, said: "The contractors are taking their time to make sure it's all done by the book, and we're grateful to everyone for keeping with us."

The crane was lifting two 950kg scaffolding beams into place, spanning the River Severn beside the bridge, as part of English Heritage’s major conservation project.

Councillor Nicola Lowery, ward member for the Ironbridge Gorge on Telford & Wrekin Council, said: "English Heritage and the appointed contractor Taziker Industrial have reassured that they are making every effort to limit disruption locally."

The scaffolding is being put up as part of a £1.2 million restoration project on the bridge, the largest ever undertaken by English Heritage.
