One lane of the eastbound carriageway was blocked off to traffic as fire crews tackled the fire at Greenway Polymers on Rock Road, which sits alongside the motorway.

Ten crews were sent to the scene - fighting the fire from both Waterloo Road and the M54 - with officers saying the fire involved plastic bales which were alight.

Clouds of thick black smoke could be seen for miles, with fumes affecting residents in Ketley and Wellington as Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service urged residents to keep doors and windows closed.

Firefighters remained at the scene of the Telford recycling plant blaze on Tuesday, as two nearby primary schools were closed.

Telford & Wrekin Council posted on Facebook: "Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service have advised that Meadows Primary School and Newdale Primary School need to close today following yesterday's fire.

"Windows need to remain closed due smoke still in the atmosphere, therefore they cannot meet Covid ventilation restrictions."

One eastbound lane of the M54 remains closed to traffic, while there is no entry onto the motorway at Junction 6 either.

Waterloo Road remains closed alongside the site of the fire.

Although plumes of smoke were still billowing from the premises on Tuesday morning, the fire service has said the incident is under control.
